Amsterdam city allows the public smoking of marijuana and other soft drugs in specialized stores. The best-demanded are the Amsterdam coffee shops, which are the typically Dutch outlets to purchase just a small amount of soft drugs.  It's symbolic to say that hippies have been using mushrooms, hash and weed, but that is not completely true since many visitors get their first smoking pot experience in this legalized environment. Before taking an Amsterdam trip you should consider that the effect of cannabis lasts 2 or 4 hours. It affects the consciousness of people and it acts different on every smoker. It is safety to buy hash and weed in Amsterdam coffee shops and don't in the street. Amsterdam coffee shops - which is not permitted to sell alcohol- will avoid prosecution if it meets the following criteria: No more than 5 grams per person may be sold in any one transaction; no hard drugs may be sold; drugs may not be advertised; the coffee shop must not cause any nuisance; no drugs can be sold to minors; and the municipality has not ordered the establishment closed. Prices of herbs and hash are cheap and they are detailed in the coffee shop menu. They are priced by the gram, by the bag, or by the joint. The price for average Dutch weed is € 7 (for a small bag of around 1.4 gram), or € 11.50 (for a 3-4 gram bag). You can get cheaper prices buying Thai and Jamaican weed. For pre-rolled joints, prices vary between € 2.50 and € 4.00, and only a limited selection of strains is available. Some hash varieties and a pure-weed joint will be on the pre-rolled menu too.
